Big Spring Fish Hatchery is just up the road and a personal favorite! Access 47 has a great little sandbar to sit and enjoy the river this year. Every year the river’s edge is a bit different but this year you’ll find me here with a book!

The Osborne Nature Center is great for kids and has a live animal exhibit to walk, a butterfly garden, and an inside learning and gift shop (Fun for kids!)
The George Maier Heritage MuseumThe Earthmoving Legacy Center - an incredible collection and history of earth moving equipment
Pikes Peak, Effigy Mounds, and Backbone State Park are all less than 30 miles and great places to hike during any season!

The St Olaf Tavern - Famous for their HUGE tenderloin, but I love their burgers and wraps!
The Gunder Roadhouse - The closest and traveled to by people from all over! You’ll find license plates from hours away at this local fav!

Fennellys’ Irish Pub - Our first friends when we moved to Elkader and one of our favorite restaurants! They’ve created the ambiance of an Irish pub with a delicious selection of Irish and American cuisine!
Schera's Algerian American Restaurant - excellent cocktails + enormous specialty brew list. Love their Algerian specialties, and you are in for a treat if you visit during one of their Paired Dinners
Johnsons - Breakfast lunch and Dinner and known for their buffet and wonderful event center
Elkader Pizzeria - Our daughter, Emmajean’s favorite!
TD’s Bar + Grill - Find a locally made ARCADE game at this fun bar with great food!

One of the things I fell in love with when I first visited northeast Iowa to meet my husband’s grandparents was this adorable riverside town of Elkader. The eclectic shops, friendly people, and river made this feel like a European adventure!
The town is walkable, so park and make your way around the block to all of the shops.
